Bedales School

Bedales School

Bedales School, founded by John Badley in 1893, was unusual at the time with its forward thinking ethos, focusing on a child's life, ie head, hand and heart. This ethos still envelopesthe school today, not only through its teaching methods, but through the environment it creates for its students.
Central to this is the building and the atmosphere it creates through architectural design together with products and systems which meet the required criteria for aesthetics, suitability, sustainability, natural light, natural ventilation and its impact on the environment. The VITRAL roof glazing system plays a fundamental part in delivering this criteria.

'Driven by environmental issues, natural light and ventilation were very important in our design. With a clear and clean design, VITRAL roof glazing has opening panels without extra frames; this maximises the above requirement. The system was therefore fundamental in our design from the initial concept.'

Giovanni Bonfanti - Associate Architect - Walters and Cohen

Due to its high architectural standards, the building has been short listed for the 2006 RIBA Awards for architecture.

“One of our new building’s finest features is the generous use of roof glass – it is a delight to benefit from natural light and to enjoy the wonderful views of the surrounding countryside from the top storey.”
